Why Assent Academy
Assent-Based Practice in ABA
Assent is the agreement to participate from individuals who cannot legally give consent. In ABA, assent-based practice is a person-centered approach that prioritizes the learner's voice in assessment, intervention, and decision-making.
This means we honor when a learner gives or withdraws assent—whether through a clear “no” or other forms of communication—and adjust our approach accordingly.
While research on assent in ABA and PBS is still emerging, we stand out by adopting these practices to ensure services remain respectful, collaborative, and truly centered on the individual.
